Coinbase returns to Super Bowl with Backstreet Boys-themed ad

Coinbase’s recent Super Bowl ad attracted mixed opinions, with some X users calling it a mockery of commercial provocation in the midst of a market crash. Others, however, praise its simplicity and memorableness.

Coinbase, the prominent cryptocurrency exchange, is back at the Super Bowl following its viral QR code ad from four years ago. This time, we’re betting on a Backstreet Boys karaoke-inspired ad.

Coinbase’s one-minute TV spot at the time for the most-watched sporting event in the United States primarily featured text animation showing the lyrics to the Backstreet Boys’ 1997 hit song “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).”

Catherine Ferdon, head of marketing at Coinbase, said in a statement that the ad focused on bringing people together for a shared experience that shows how the crypto community has rapidly grown.

This is Coinbase’s first Super Bowl ad spot since 2022, when the company ran a 60-second commercial showing a color-changing QR code bouncing across the screen like a DVD screensaver.

The QR code ad mentioned a link offering $15 in BTC to those who sign up with Coinbase. Coinbase was so popular that its website crashed and reportedly received 20 million hits per minute.

different opinions

Coinbase’s recent Super Bowl ad attracted a variety of opinions, with some X users citing commercial provocations and connections between cryptocurrencies and the Trump administration amid a market crash.

Others, however, praise its simplicity and memorableness. The exchange responded to user X who said the ads were bad and said it would work if they were talking about it.

Many others have also posted their opinions about the ad online. One user on X posted that I went crazy booing when I saw the Coinbase ad. Meanwhile, Axios reporter Andrew Sollender said the room he was in exploded with groans and cries of “fuck you” after the ad was published.

Chase Wright, an engineer at the Ethereum Foundation, told the Coinbase exchange that 50% of the attendees at a party he attended were singing and laughing.
